E Blues — Bass (5-String)

The E Blues scale runs 6 notes per octave in the blues family. Below it sits on the Bass (5-String)'s BEADG strings with every root marked, because a bassist reads a scale map as a set of targets around the root, not a row of dots.

The minor pentatonic with a b5 "blue note" wedged in — that one extra note adds grit, tension, and a sly, vocal quality. Tough, expressive, and unmistakably bluesy.

Heard in: Blues, rock, jazz, rhythm and blues, and boogie-woogie — Delta and Chicago blues, Hendrix, Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan.
